Control Cable Installation

Routing and terminating the cable that carries every signal between the switching module and the control cabinet.

The control cable is the link between the outdoor switching module and the control cabinet at the base of the pole. Every trip signal, every measurement and every status indication passes through it.

It is also rated IP65 or IP66 depending on the model, which is only meaningful if the terminations at both ends are made correctly and the cable is supported so it is not working against its own weight.

What control cable installation covers

  • Routing between the switching module and the control cabinet
  • Mechanical support and strain relief

  • Continuity verification before commissioning

What matters in practice

  • Induced interference

    Control cable routed alongside primary conductors for any distance picks up induced voltage. Separation and routing decisions made at installation avoid a problem that is difficult to fix afterwards.

  • Strain relief

    A cable carrying its own weight at the termination will eventually fail at the gland. Support is not optional detail.

  • The IP rating is only as good as the gland

    An IP66-rated cabinet with a badly made gland entry is not IP66. Water ingress into a control cabinet is an expensive failure.

  • Physical protection

    Rodent damage to control cabling is a real and recurring cause of recloser faults on rural feeders.
